Any hot Valentines plans in the works?! Do you have a wonderful date planned at one of our county's finer dining establishments? Is your LBD picked out, great accessories, killer heels and a pair of your nicer knickers on standby? OR do you happen to fall into the married category?! Dining out criteria for me generally involves crayons, loud music, pizza & highchairs. I can't tell you the last time I saw a tablecloth outside of my own dining room (unless you count the paper ones at Nick's Tomato Pie). ANYHOOO, poor me, poor me, pour me a little Sauvignon Blanc and lets talk about the best way to do a Family Valentine's Day.

I admit I got a bit bored with the pick of the week entry; it became a bit samey and lacking in inspiration BUT consensus is that the readers like it so its back to its bargain busting best this week with the odd pick of the day thrown in for good measure.

Back by popular demand is my 'on sale' section. (Apologies to my coupon mavens). Right now you can find at least one brand of fresh tomatoes on sale be they plum, beefsteak or in Publix case the dinky sweet grape (2 for $4 'til Thursday). Combine these with some of your BOGO stash of fire roasted canned tomatoes with garlic, chicken stock and other storecupboard goodies and you can put together the best lycopene (still channeling Dr. Oz) packed soup you ever tasted.

Is it really Fall? My daughter's asking for her Halloween stuff but the thermometer in my car still reads 90 degrees! What can we look forward to from the markets to reflect this shift in the season?
Almost Apple Blossom Time!

Lunchbox time! I love making lunchboxes, yeah yeah, I should get a life, I can't help it; I just do. Not that I have a big eating daughter, she'd be happy with her personal favorite, 'salami & cheese' but given half the chance I'd fill her princess lunchbox with much more exotic fare.

I've decided that the supermarkets saw way too much of my cash last week so this week its ultra slim, coupontastic, storecupboard savings, bargain basement smart shopping. Get my drift?!

Dr. Dave turns 50 in a couple of weeks. Hard to believe from looking at his cherub-like chops and full head of hair but my Peter Pan will mark a half century with a family & friends party hosted by Moi. As I've optimistically taken on the task of catering this little soiree single handed (well would you pay someone $2,000 to grill a few burgers in your garden?!) I'm taking all the supermarket help I can find.
A fine vintage!

It's so stifling out there right now you either stay in, crank up the air and eat casserole or try to live like a normal person and go light. I have no option but try to go light this week - I'm still wrestling a few post Disney lbs, and the fads just aren't doing it for me anymore. I know I can ditch some serious poundage on Atkins or similar but after reading Bittman and watching Food Inc., I'm not down with the massive meat consumption anymore.

Can the fresh, local, seasonal mandate reduce shopping bills? Can Mark Bittman's approach of eating less meat in general and more beans & seasonal fruits & vegetables result in a fatter wallet and slimmer waistline? I'm more than happy to give it a try! I followed his approach on Tuesday and spent $100 for my family of four on such produce including only two meat products; some organic chicken sausages and some organic ground beef. Will this last the week? So far so good....

Whatever your plans for the holiday weekend - they include eating right?! I'm still in a post 'Food Inc.,' phase and expect to be for the foreseeable future so on this basis my pickings are slimmer than usual. I'm reading labels more voraciously than before and have become very skeptical of farm style labels and 'all natural' claims. There's nothing special about 'natural' in hair or food. Boobs on the other hand...
